8 OCTOBER 2009 My name is Ilze, I am ex-volunteer in NGO Ookull, now I am EVS coordinator in here.
I would like to invite you participate in our project-NGO Ookull (2007-EE-16)
About our organization:
NGO Öökull (Owl) is established in 1998. In 1999 Children and Youth Centre rooms were opened for youngsters and so it became a first youth centre in Tartu. The goals of Öökull are to help and evolve children without parental care and also to help their parents/custodian in order to prevent criminality. From September to June there are 2 centres open. One of them (Anne Linna) is working with children who are 7-13 year old. The other centre's (Öökull) target group of is young people between 12 and 20 year age. Both are working with target group, who have lost their home, family or safe living environment.
The activities are based on multidisciplinary teamwork - youth workers, social workers, other specialists and volunteers. During summer different activities outside the Tartu is organised: like youth exchanges, work camps, military camps etc. where the disadavantage youth and children (especially with criminal past and behavior problems) are main target group. There is more than 900 children who took part in Öökull`s activities in last 3 years.
There are 7 members on the board and 30 members of organisation as well as local and international volunteers working.
First vacancy is in children centre Anne Linna:
1st project-Anne Linna Children centre
Children centre is open from 12.00 - 18.00 every day except weekends .
Children attending centre are often coming from russian speaking families or families with bad social background - alcoholism, family violence, low economical status, that brings up such problems as low self-esteeme, behaviour problems, conflicts with law, disregard of school etc.
This centre offer schoolchildren possibility to study in the centre under guidance - so they have a chance to ask youth workers help, if they don't understand some exercise. Besides that volunteer will be welcome organise different workshops depending on his/her interests and skills. It could be theather class, fairy tale afternoons, painting, drawing and other handicraft activities. Also some clowning or jugling would be nice activitiy. As most of the children comes to the centre because their parents are still at work, sometimes they just wants to play some games and talk to the people to not to feel alone.
Additionally centre organises discos, anniversaries (birthday parties, Valentines Day etc). In the summer we have a lot of activities in the camps outside town. All these activities volunteer take part and organise in cooperation with our team, but depending on the abilities and wishes of the volunteers he/she can be assisting in activities which are organised by our staff or provide some new ideas and take more responsibility if feels like it. If there will be any kind of initative coming from the youngsters we will be more than glad to support them. We are ready to encourage volunteers if needed.
We believe that this project will help volunteers to improve their responsibilities and strenghten their communication skills. Also working with children is often easiest way to improve the language skills. Teaching others can often be the reason of improving your own skills and exploring a new ones.

Youth centre Öökull was created with the objective of crime-prevention work among disadvantaged youngsters and providing equal opportunities for the children coming from bad social background families by offering different useful and interesting activities and educational courses to fill in free time of children and youngsters and keep them off the streets.
We are helping them to find their way out of wrong directions they are taking in their lives and give them opportunity to develop good sides of their personalities such as creativity - theater and music lessons, handicrafts, practical skills - cooking classes, taking responsibility - organising events together with centres staff, others - hikings, movie evenings etc. We are also working hard on involving our young people in national and international events such as youth exchanges and summer camps where they can improve their communication and language skills as well as go through new experiences and change their perspective of view on life.
