11 MARCH 2009

For the April deadline the Polish Robert Schuman Foundation is looking for a volunteer from Programme or Partner country who would like to join our EVS team in the Project 2007 - Pl - 57

The activity will be held in Special Kindergarten no 213 in Warsaw for 10 months from September 2009 until the end of June 2010

The main task for volunteer will be to support Kuba - a 26 years old autistic boy.
Kuba will be the first ex-pupil whom we will try to integrate to our school as an employee. The volunteer will organise Kuba's daily work and help him with his activities in the kindergarten.
If we do this right, Kuba will become the first autistic person employed in our kindergarten and thus increase his competitiveness on the open job market
If you want to improve your skills in a social work with an autistic person, we invite you to join us!

Requements: Due to the difficulty of the task, we are searching for a volunteer who would already have some experience in the field of work with handicapped people. Although experience is important in this activity, we will focus our attention more on the volunteer's motivation and possible benefits they can gain from the project in their future life.

Project Enviroment: The Special Kindergarten no 213 in Warsaw is an educational establishment for mentally handicapped people. Although it is called a kindergarten, there are various age groups in this institution. The pupils of the "kindergarten" are boys and girls between 3 and 25 year of age. Mental retardation is accompanied by the other developmental disorders, e.g. autism, ADHD, behavioural disorders, physical disability. The pupils are not able to live independently. Each of them needs care and help in everyday activities to some extent. They are open to new contacts, however, sometimes it takes time and effort to gain the pupil's trust. They can be cheerful and joyful and come into emotional contact. On the other hand, the verbal contact is difficult as most of pupils do not speak.

The great diversity of our pupils' traits and characters as well as different kinds of disorders, which determine their behavior, does not allow to describe the target group in short. It seems that readiness to new challenges and creativity of the volunteers will allow them to create the relation satisfactory for them and for their pupils.

Altogether there are 45 children and adolescents divided into 8 groups in the "kindergarten": 3 preschool (children 3-10 years old) and 5 revival (people 10 - 25 years old) attend the "Kindergarten". The staff consists of 17 specialists: special pedagogues, psychologist, therapist, physiotherapist, speech therapist and also volunteers and students. The Special Kindergarten no 213 is often visited by university teachers and students from Pedagogical and Psychological University. The working team in the "kindergarten" is composed of young, energetic and motivated people, looking forward to welcome foreign volunteers to work with them.
